Colonia de Sant Jordi belongs to the municipality of Ses Salines (the name originates from the numerous salt flats already used by the Romans), which is situated in the south of the island between Santanyi and Campos. Years ago Colonia de Sant Jordi only consisted of a few fishermen’s houses but today is a well known tourist centre.
Inland, only seven kilometers from the coast, the town of Ses Salines appears. This is the capital of the municipality with straight broad streets, modern buildings and an elegant church dating from the turn of the century and didicated to Saint Bartholomew providing a point of reference for the seamen of our coast.
The coastal area with its small islands and unspoilt beaches, fine sand and lush vegetation is surrounded by crystal clear water. Colonia de Sant Jordi extends over the beautiful beaches of Ets Estanys and Es Trenc on one side, and Es Dolc and Es Carbo on the other. The wind blows water between the rocks and the summer sun evaporates it leaving behind tasty crystalline white salt.
